Easter Week - Semana Santa
|
||||||
|
Easter Week is the highpoint
of Spain's religious calendar and is celebrated throughout the country,
although the largest and most famous processions are to be found in Andalucía.
While Almuñécar's celebrations are much smaller than the monumental
processions of the big cities, they are still impressive and charged with
a unique atmosphere. At times like this, visitors can sincerely experience
the strong religious sentiments of the local people.
Processions organised by laical religious fraternities, or cofradías, carry tableaux depicting scenes from the Passion and Death of Christ. These heavy floats, or pasos, are often carried by upwards of 30 people and accompanied by long lines of penitents and devout carrying candles and standards as they wind through the narrow streets. A spectator area is constructed on the Avenida Costa del Sol where all the processions must pass. Easter Week starts on Palm Sunday and finishes on Easter Sunday (Day of the Resurrection) with processions every day except for Saturday. The most important is "El Paso" on Good Friday morning while perhaps the most atmospheric starts around midnight on the Wednesday and is held in total silence.
Programs giving times and routes of the processions can be found around town and at the tourist office.
