Ten minutes drive to the east of Almuñécar along the coast and you'll arrive at Salobreña. The old town, unchanged for centuries, clusters around steep slopes leading up to a picturesque Moorish castle which dominates the fertile plain bordering the mouth of the Rio Guadalfeo. Some fields of sugar cane can still be seen on the alluvial flatlands, reminding us that only a short time ago the village was centre of a thriving sugar industry. Unfortunately the last sugar harvest was in 2006 and soon all the fields will either convert to tropical fruit production or disappear as the modern town expands. A wander up to the 10th century arab castle will reward you with some magnificent views of the mountains and coast and, for most of the year, you can clearly see the snow-capped Sierra Nevada glinting in the distance. The central castle patio also provides a superb and atmospheric setting for live concerts during the summer months. Contact the tourist office for a program of events for next season.
