Salobreña and its Moorish castle

Ten minutes drive to the east of Almuñécar along the coast and you'll arrive at Salobreña. The old town, unchanged for centuries, clusters around steep slopes leading up to a picturesque Moorish castle which dominates the fertile plain bordering the mouth of the Rio Guadalfeo.

Fields of sugar cane still dominate the alluvial flatlands, cultivated mostly for distillation into the popular local ron pálido, or pale rum. Although once the mainstay of the economy, sugar production has declined rapidly over the last few years as tourism and the cultivation of subtropical fruits have proven to be more profitable.

A wander up to the 10th century arab castle will reward you with some magnificent views of the mountains and coast and, for most of the year, you can clearly see the snow-capped Sierra Nevada glinting in the distance. The central castle patio also provides a superb and atmospheric setting for live concerts during the summer months. Contact the tourist office for a program of events for next season.
