Car
Road systems throughout southern Spain are rapidly improving and travel times to Almuñécar from the major cities are decreasing annually. When the planned coastal highway, the E15, is completed, Almuñécar will have even faster connections. To keep up to date on the latest dual-carriageway developments, we recommend you read the monthly online Seaside Gazette.

Some approximate travel times:  Málaga - 1.25 hr    Granada - 1.25 hr    Almería - 1.5 hr    Sevilla - 3.5 hr    Madrid - 4.5 hr

Plane
Málaga Airport (90km)
This lies to the west of the city on the road to Torremolinos. Most charter flights and international connections heading for the south coast arrive here.

There are three passenger terminals and one cargo terminal: Most people will use Terminal 2.

Terminal 1 - Arrivals from non-Schengen countries plus Ceuta and Melilla.
Terminal 2 - Departures and arrivals of flights to and from all Schengen countries. (France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Luxembourg, Greece, Belgium, Austria, Great Britain and Ireland.)
Terminal 3 - Private aviation arrivals and departures.

The airport is connected to the town centre by local bus, train and taxi services.

The bus will take you straight to the central bus station where you can get a connection to Almuñécar and La Herradura. This is the cheapest and simplest way to get through Málaga but, beware, the last bus to Almuñécar leaves at 19.30 hr.

The train service is not so convenient since it's quite a hike to the platform and arriving at the Málaga city terminal leaves you about 400 metres away from the bus station. The service is used mainly by travellers heading west along the Costa del Sol.

Taking a taxi to the bus station is probably the simplest solution, especially if you're in a group. It should be a fixed price to anywhere in the town centre which you'll find marked up by the terminal exit.

To travel directly from the airport to your destination address you can either take a taxi (see below) or hire a car.

Granada Airport (80km)
Though mostly used for national shuttles between the major Spanish cities, this small airport is now receiving an increasing number of charters and international scheduled flights, including cut-price flights to many European cities, including the UK.

To get to Granada you can take a bus or taxi, and from there take a bus to the coast. Last connection to Almuñécar leaves Granada bus station at 20.00 hr. Or, for a direct connection, you should either reserve a taxi or hire a car.

Train
Arriving by train is picturesque and time-consuming with most routes being much slower than taking a bus. But for those who wish to travel to Almuñécar from Madrid or further north, and who are not in a hurry, it's an attractive alternative. With so many mountains bordering the coast, the last part of the journey is slow, particularly to Málaga, but the dramatic landscapes can give travellers a true idea of the immensity of Andalucía and its geography.

Nearest mainline terminals are at Málaga (80km) and Granada (70km).

Boat
Nearest passenger ferry ports are at Málaga (80km) and Almería (130km).
For yachtsmen and small boat owners, the Marina del Este is an attractive sports port located between Almuñécar and La Herradura that offers berths, boat services and supplies.

Bus
Almuñécar is well connected to Andalucía and the rest of Spain, with daily services reaching as far north as Madrid and Barcelona.

Bus station:
Alsina Graells Sur
Avda Juan Carlos I, 1

Taxi
For those arriving by plane, taxis can be found at the airports or ordered in advance. Fares will be the same either way and current tariffs should be clearly signed at the airport exit. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

To avoid disappointment we advise booking a local taxi in advance. Because they know the area well they'll find your destination address much quicker. And they're used to antisocial hours so a 4 a.m. pick-up is no big deal. With your name, flight number and time of arrival, you can make a booking by phone any time.
