Arqueological Museum
(Cueva de los Siete Palacios) |
||||
|
This small museum is housed in what is popularly called the Cave of the Seven Palaces. In fact the construction appears never to have been designed for living in and is now understood to have formed part of a Roman remodelling of the 'town centre' during the 1st century a.d. With its growing economic importance the city needed building space. Flat land was in short demand so they decided to make some, as only the Romans knew how. Building sturdy arched piers they created the foundations for their urban expansion. Today, only a few of the 'caves' exist although some are still being lived in. The museum's varied collection of local finds offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into Almuñécar's past. Many of the most important pieces excavated locally are unfortunately in the arqueological museum of Granada but, even so, this collection will surprise you.
But by far the most important piece, both arqueologically and artistically (and reason enough for visiting the museum), is a beautiful Egyptian vase that dates from around the 17th century b.c. Carved from solid quartz, it was discovered in a local household where it had been used quite normally as a water jug for fifty years!
To find the museum, follow signs from the Plaza de la Constitución (where the Town Hall is) up the hill towards the castle. |
