Cotobro Bridge |
Excavated for the Roman Bimilenial celebrations, this attractive little bridge is mostly of medieval construction although almost certainly built on the foundations of an earlier Roman bridge. It is almost exactly as it was atleast a 1000 years ago, its stone cobbled surface worn smooth from the passing traffic. Crossing the water course known as the Barranco de Cotobro, this bridge was most likely an important link in the Roman coast road, the Vía Herculea, which connected Cartagena (in Murcia) to Málaga. More recently the locals have known it as the Camino Real (Royal Way) which they used as the quickest way to get from Almuñécar to La Herradura. |

The bridge itself is small and unassuming with a curious W-shaped system of gullies to run off the rainwater, all beautifully cobbled. To either side you'll see remains of the track heading off under two metres of topsoil.
Specialist agencies can arrange visits to this and other outlying monuments as part of one of their fixed programs or as a tailor-made itinerary.
